La Voile Noire
La Voile Noire is not a traditional flat-topped or soil-bearing island, but rather a dramatic and dramatic geological feature of Algeria's coastline. It consists of a steep, conical rock rising 143 meters in height at the very extremity of a sharp coastal point that juts out roughly 800 meters into the Mediterranean Sea, acting much like a natural mole. True to its French moniker (The Black Sail), the formation derives its name from its distinctive optical illusion: when viewed from a distance, the sharp profile of the rock mimics the silhouette of a sailing vessel moving across the horizon.
